Support Center Support Center. My father knows i am vegan and practice intermittent fasting, however he never would come to believe in the healing of fasting, and has continuously tried to discredit me over the years. I ordered this book off of amazon, because it had been in my wishlist for awhile , and i though i would order it for some more insight on IF. The book is great, easy to understand for the average individual and really touches on the benefits of fasting.

After i finished this book i left it on my fathers desk so that one day he would pick it up and read it. My father never sleeps because of his RA and is often shuffling through the night trying to get comfortable. But one night he finally picked up the book and started to read it. Low and behold he started fasting the next day. He was on 20mg and now is down to 7mg. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who is uneducated on the benefits of fasting and just beginning to get their feet wet in the wonders of Intermittent Fasting.

Fuhrman's office. So I thought, ok, fasting might be the next step, and bought this book. I wrote to Dr. Fuhrman's office to ask a few questions that came up for me. This was the response I got: "While Dr.

Fuhrman says that fasting may be beneficial for certain medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases, since he wrote Fasting and Eating for Health in , there have been research advancements in the field of nutritional science pointing to the healing effects of a plant-based, nutrient-rich eating style. After careful review of thousands of nutritional research studies, Dr.

Fuhrman teaches that commitment to his nutritarian eating program will provide the same health benefits of fasting. The difference is that fasting provides only short-term results, while commitment to eating nutrient-rich, plant-based foods gives long-term results. Consult your local physician before beginning any fast. It would still be interesting, but then you would know that it's purpose was more to understand Fuhrman's approach in the 90s. The short of it: the book is interesting, but you're going to get outdated info. I dabbled with fasting between a few times but was always uncertain of how beneficial it might be and how long to fast and whether it was really safe.

All the writing about the subject was so quackish and devoid of any scientific basis that I tried it only out of curiosity and only very cautiously, doing a one or two day fast just to see how it felt. Then in I asked my local health food store if they had any new books on fasting they could order and this was the one they found. Reading it changed my life.

I finally saw that there was a great deal of good, sound data and research on fasting, and Fuhrman explained the principles and realities of fasting in a very well-organized, clearly written way. I proceeded with my first four-day fast and the results were amazing. I had developed a severe peanut allergy that kept me from being able to eat my favorite nut for years, which the fast completely reversed and eliminated. It also unfortunately made it possible to eat some bad foods like Doritos again I had been so allergic to them I couldn't go near them--until after the fast.

I am almost sorry that Fuhrman has become so popular with all his other books and appearances on PBS and the Dr. Oz Show, because he seems to have abandoned any mention of fasting on those shows and in his website , perhaps out of a fear that it will make him less popular or appear kookish to the uninformed. I wish and hope that he would bring up the option of fasting in the near future in some of these appearances, and add a section on it to his website. Go to Amazon. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Most people, including overweight people, lose some muscle mass with every pound they shed. Without glucose going to the brain, thinking becomes more difficult. Blood pressure drops, and you risk passing out. This includes the heart, which, after all, is just a large muscle. Eventually, the heart may slip out of rhythm. Decades ago, doctors tried treating obese patients with fasting, but they stopped after five patients died, two from heart problems. In the s, nearly 60 people died after spending an average of four months on a fad liquid protein diet.

People with severe anorexia most commonly die of heart disorders. In an effort to balance her electrolytes, she drank Himalayan sea-salt water. Prolonged fasting is also not as effective a weight-loss strategy as it may seem, experts told me. Though intermittent fasting —in which people consume little or nothing for up to 24 hours at a time—has been shown to help some people lose weight, the same is not true of long-term fasts.

Tinsley, a Texas Tech University professor of exercise physiology who has studied intermittent fasting, via email. This is in contrast to exposure to a large stressor, which could cause harm to the body.
