Using the title of a seminal book in the field seemed wrong. However, the source of the title is acknowledged quite thoroughly in the course of the stories, so I stopped being annoyed. This is a pretty good collection of stories. The first story takes up more than half the book. Many of my friends in the neighborhood experienced that environment and the story rings true and is fairly entertaining.

In vivid detail, McManus captures the psychology of an altar boy coming of age in suburban Chicago. We follow Vincent Killeen as he's being groomed for the priesthood in the 50s and 60s.
As he matures into adolescence, discovering poker, girls and liquor, his "calling" starts to fade. But this progression, and the rebellion against stifling Catholic dogma, takes time. In between, McManus treats us to a number of wry passages. In one scene, Vincent, age 10 or 11, almost forcibly baptizes a player on his baseball team.
In another, when Vince is about the same age, an uncle consoles him on losing a poker hand. I've followed Jim McManus for a long time, and he has a mind-bending range.

In all cases, his astute, witty voice comes through loud and clear.
That's true, in spades, of The Education of a Poker Player. In fact, whenever McManus is dealing,I definitely want in on the game. October 29, - Published on Amazon. This beautiful book touched me deeply and brought me back to my own Catholic childhood. The children and adults are equally vivid and the dialogue is nuanced and so very real.
